Beginner Kayak Skills Sessions
Can be booked in advance most days, start times 10:00, 14:00 and 18:00
Get to grips with the basic skills of kayaking or brush up your existing skills for the summer ahead. These are skills focused sessions with plenty of demonstration and practical learning. So we won’t be paddling far and you will likely get wet. There will also be opportunities to practice self and assisted rescues.
Bring your own kayak and kit or use our sit on tops kayaks and kit.
We will aim to hold these sessions at St Brelades bay. But they may be move to another location depending on weather and sea conditions predicted for the day. All participants will be advised 2 days before their session.
Costs: £47.50pp per session
These sessions can also be accredited with either the Paddle Start or Discover awards for just £5 extra.

Take your paddling beyond the basics and build real confidence on the water with our Beginner Kayak Skills Course.
Across five progressive weekly sessions, you’ll develop the essential skills every kayaker needs. Learning how to paddle more efficiently, control your kayak with confidence, handle changing conditions, and recover safely if things don’t go to plan.
This is practical, hands-on coaching designed to get you comfortable, capable, and adventure ready for the summer ahead. Sessions are skills-focused rather than distance paddles, with expert demonstrations, plenty of coaching, and lots of time practising on the water. Expect to get wet as we work through self-rescues and assisted rescues as part of the course.
Whether you’re completely new to kayaking or looking to sharpen rusty skills, this course will leave you feeling more capable every time you launch.
Bring your own kayak and kit, or use our sit-on-top kayaks and equipment.
Sessions will usually run from St Brelade’s Bay, with alternative locations used when conditions allow for the best learning environment. Any venue changes will be confirmed at least 2 days in advance based on forecast weather and sea conditions.
Course Cost: £225pp for the full 5-week course

Jersey Explorer Week (Intermediate/Advanced)
14th – 18th September 2026
Come and explore the great paddling opportunities in and around Jersey. You’ll have a chance to play in moving water around the island and hone your navigational skills and trip planning. Weather/swell permitting there is also opportunities for exploring caves and offshore reefs. This is a perfect area to build your day trip log book if your working toward the BCAB (Adv) Sea Kayak Leader award. Neaps tides at the start of the week are also a ideal time for exploring the off shore reefs. Min. group size 2 people.
Getting here and away:
You can bring your own kit via ferry or fly in and use our kayaks and kit from many regional UK airports. Which is a time efficient way to get more paddling in for your days away from home.
Cost: £300 per person for the 5 days guided paddling with you own equipment.
or
£425 per person using our kayaks and kit.
There is the option to be assessed for other awards during this time. Such as Sea Kayak Award and Coastal Sea Kayak Award for just £45 extra.
2 Day Paddlesport Leader Training
8th – 9th September 2026
22nd – 23rd September 2026
Build your skills with the 2 day Paddle UK Paddlesport Leader Training. Jersey offers a fantastic environment for developing leadership, decision-making and group management skills in sheltered water and simple moving water environments. With a wide range of bays, harbours and coastal locations, we can tailor the training to provide realistic leadership scenarios while working within the remit of the award.
The course focuses on practical leadership skills, journey planning, safety and rescue techniques, group management, environmental awareness and developing sound judgement. Whether you’re looking to lead club paddles, support group activities or take the next step in your paddlesport journey, this course provides a supportive and practical learning environment.
Getting here and away:
You can bring your own kayak, canoe or paddleboard via ferry from Poole and Portsmouth, UK or from Saint Malo, France. Alternatively, you can fly into Jersey and use our equipment, making it easy to fit training around work and other commitments.
Cost: £250 per person
If you would like additional time to develop your personal paddling, rescue and leadership skills, a 5 day version is also available.
5 Day Paddlesport Leader Training: £590 per person
2 Day Paddlesport Leader Assessment
6th – 7th October 2026
You can take the assessment as a direct assessment or combine it with training in the days beforehand. The direct option is suitable for paddlers who can demonstrate they already have the required experience, leadership, rescue and decision-making skills appropriate to the award.
The assessment is mostly practical and designed to evaluate your on water ability to lead groups safely and effectively within the remit of the Paddlesport Leader qualification.
Course Registration and Requirements
Before booking onto your assessment, you will need to:
- Be a member of Paddle UK.
- Be 16 years of age or older.
- Hold an appropriate First Aid qualification.
- Have completed appropriate Safeguarding Training.
- Have completed your Paddlesport Leader registration with Paddle UK.
While formal training is not required before assessment, candidates should have sufficient paddling and leadership experience to meet the assessment standard.

2 Day Sea Kayak Leader Training (Tidal)
17th – 18th September 2026
1st – 2nd October 2026
Build your skills with the 2 day Paddle UK Sea Kayak Leader Training. Jersey provides an outstanding environment for developing sea kayak leadership, navigation, decision-making and group management skills in a dynamic tidal environment. With sloping sandy beaches on the south coast and dramatic cliffs, caves and rocky shorelines on the north coast, we can find suitable conditions for training across a wide range of weather, wind and sea states.
The course focuses on practical leadership skills, tidal planning, navigation, safety and rescue techniques, journey management, environmental awareness and developing sound judgement on the sea. Throughout the training, you’ll work through realistic scenarios designed to prepare you for leading groups on day journeys in moderate tidal water.
Whether you’re progressing towards assessment, looking to build confidence in your leadership decisions or seeking to become a more capable and effective sea kayaker, this course provides a supportive, challenging and highly practical learning environment.

2 Day Sea Kayak Leader Assessment (Tidal)
15th – 16th October 2026
You can do this as a direct assessment or combine it with Sea Kayak Leader training at some point beforehand. Ideally you will have taken an experience building period between training and assessment to build a strong logbook to demonstrate paddling in a variety of locations and sea conditions.
Course registration and requirements:
Before you book onto your Assessment, you will need to:
- Be a member of Paddle UK
- 16 years of age (or older)
- Have an appropriate First Aid Qualification
- Have appropriate Safeguarding Training
- Have competed the Paddle UK Navigation, Weather and tidal planning modules.
- Plus completed your registration

British Canoeing Weather, Tides and Navigation Modules
4 Modules over 3 days 12th – 14th October 2026
(Weather, Surf and Swell, Tides and Currents, Navigation, Open Water Crossings)
Whether you’re new to the sea paddling environment or looking to sharpen your paddle planning skills, understanding Weather, tides and navigation is essential for safe and enjoyable journeys. This series of courses is designed to give you the knowledge and confidence to plan and paddle with the sea, not against it.
We’ll begin in the classroom, where you’ll work through a series of engaging, hands-on desktop exercises. Using weather data, charts, tide tables, and practical scenarios, you’ll learn how to interpret weather forecasts, tidal streams, calculate safe passage times, and plot routes that make the most of the conditions. These sessions aren’t just theory—they’re interactive, problem-solving exercises that prepare you for real situations on the water.
In the afternoon, we’ll take your new skills to the sea. You’ll have the chance to apply what you’ve learned in a practical setting, using real tidal flows and coastal features to bring the classroom to life. Under the guidance of an experienced coach, you’ll practice decision-making, navigation techniques, and tidal awareness—all in the dynamic environment where it matters most.
By the end of the day, you’ll not only understand how to understand weather data, read charts and predict tides, but also how to apply that knowledge with confidence in your paddling. This course is the bridge between theory and practice, ensuring you leave with skills you can trust every time you take to the sea.

Any 1 day Module = £85
4 Modules over 3 days = £240 = Required for Sea Kayak Leader assessment
5 Modules over 4 days = £350 = Required for Advanced Sea Kayak Leader assessment

Tide Race Skills Development Courses
2 day option – Thu 10th and Fri 11th September 2026
4 day option – Thu 10th to Sun 13th September 2026
What skills/knowledge you will develop:
– An improved understanding of the components that make up the tidal environment, and how tide interacts with wind, swell and the sea bed to create tide races. This will put you in the right mindset to begin reading the water and moving around in this environment
– A range of tactics for moving through tidal races. From simply passing through under control, to progressing and developing skills for surfing your way up through a tidal race. All underpinned by a solid technical skill set, focused around power generation, paddling speeds and efficient steering.
– To show you ways to structure your practice which allows you to develop confidence and build a dependable skill set. Helping you to begin seeing this environment as a place to play, not fear.
– Adaptions to standard safety and rescue skills for the tidal environment.
Who is this for?
Sea kayakers who have good level of experience in wind and swell and have a reasonably reliable roll. Who are looking to improve their paddling skills in more dynamic and demanding tidal waters.
We have 3 big tidal races we can utilise around the island. Powered by some of the highest tidal ranges in the world. Noirmont Point, Belle Hougue and White Rock. Plus a few other smaller spots with patches of fast currents, scattered around the island. Each location has its own character and brings its own challenges.
A key part of improving your paddle skill level from an intermediate to an advanced sea kayaker is becoming more comfortable and confident in moving water and tide races. This course is all about supporting this transition. Developing the skills, knowledge and confidence for paddling in faster tidal waters, using top locations around the island.
