The Paddle UK Paddlesport Leader Award is designed for paddlers who want to lead groups on sheltered water in kayaks, canoes, stand up paddleboards or mixed craft. It is ideal for club paddlers, outdoor instructors, activity centre staff and anyone looking to take the next step from participant to leader.

Our two-day Paddlesport Leader Training course provides practical, hands-on learning focused on leadership, group management, decision-making and rescue skills. The aim is simple: to help you become a safe, capable and effective leader who can provide enjoyable experiences for others.

Jersey offers an excellent environment for leadership training. With sheltered bays, harbours, tidal bays and wind-affected water all within a short distance, we can select venues that provide the right level of challenge for your development while remaining within the remit of the award. This variety allows us to create realistic leadership scenarios and adapt to prevailing weather conditions throughout the course.

What is the Paddle UK Paddlesport Leader Award?

The Paddlesport Leader Award supports leaders to run safe, quality and enjoyable trips based on the needs and aspirations of their group. It enables leaders to work with mixed craft including kayaks, canoes and paddleboards on sheltered water environments.

The award is suitable for paddlers who wish to:

Why Train in Jersey?

Many Paddlesport Leader courses are delivered on inland lakes, reservoirs or canals. Jersey offers something different.

Our coastline provides access to sheltered bays, harbours, tidal bays and wind-affected coastal water, allowing leaders to develop their skills in a dynamic environment while remaining within the sheltered water remit of the award.

Within a relatively small area we have access to:

  • A wide range of launching and landing locations.

This variety allows us to create realistic leadership scenarios and find suitable conditions across a wide range of weather patterns, reducing the likelihood of losing valuable training time.

Leaders also gain valuable experience considering the combined effects of weather, tide, wind and group management. These factors are often present during real paddlesport journeys and provide excellent opportunities to develop judgement and decision-making skills.

Beyond the Qualification

At Kayak Nomad, our goal is not simply to prepare candidates to pass an assessment.

Qualifications are important, but effective leadership comes from developing sound judgement, practical experience and the ability to make good decisions when conditions are less than perfect.

Throughout the course we encourage candidates to think beyond the syllabus and consider the wider responsibilities of leadership. This includes understanding the needs of different paddlers, adapting plans when conditions change, managing group dynamics and building the confidence to make informed decisions.

The most capable leaders are not those who know the assessment criteria best. They are the ones who can consistently create safe, enjoyable and rewarding experiences for the people they lead.

Who Is This Course For?

This course is suitable for paddlers who:

  • Are comfortable paddling independently.
  • Want to lead groups on sheltered water.

  • Intend to work towards the Paddle UK Paddlesport Leader Assessment.

You do not need to be an expert paddler before attending. The training is designed to support your development and help identify areas for further practice before assessment.

Course Format

Day One

  • Leadership foundations.

Day Two

  • Journey planning.

  • Individual action planning for future development.

Assessment Preparation

Training is not mandatory before assessment, however most candidates benefit significantly from structured training and feedback before presenting themselves for assessment.

The course will help you understand the assessment process, identify any gaps in your experience and create a development plan tailored to your goals.

Course Prerequisites

To get the most from the course, you should:

  • Be comfortable paddling your chosen craft independently.
  • Have experience paddling on sheltered water.
  • Be motivated to develop your leadership skills.

There are no formal prerequisites for attending training.

Equipment

You are welcome to bring your own kayak, canoe or paddleboard.

Quality equipment can also be provided if required, including:

  • Kayaks.
  • Canoes.
  • Paddleboards.
  • Paddles.
  • Buoyancy aids.
  • Safety equipment.

Getting to Jersey

You can travel to Jersey by ferry from Poole, Portsmouth and Saint Malo, allowing you to bring your own equipment.

Alternatively, fly from a range of UK regional airports and use our equipment during the course. Many candidates find this a convenient way to maximise their time on the water while minimising travel logistics.
